Hohoe Assembly Reject Plastic Chairs

Members of the Hohoe District Assembly at a meeting yesterday rejected additional 600 plastic chairs purchased by the administration recently at a cost of 12 million cedis without their approval. The assembly bought 350 of the chairs about two years ago for hiring to the public to generate revenue. The rejection followed a debate on a supplementary budget to be adopted by the house for presentation to the Volta regional co-ordinating council and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. Mr. Delali Ndoh, a government appointee, quoting the standing orders of the house which deals with the award of contracts, tabled a motion which was carried by the members to reject the purchase of the chairs. He argued that ''whoever bought them must pay from his pocket''. Mr. William Puplampu, Hohoe District Chief Executive in his sessional address, said the assembly has received 151.8 million cedis as its share of the district assemblies common fund for the second quarter of the year. This brings its receipts so far this year to 607.3 million cedis. On the financial position of the assembly, he said from January to September this year, 56.9 million cedis revenue was collected out of the budgeted figure of 140.9 million cedis for the year. He said the assembly's expenditure stood at 51.9 million cedis out of 139 million cedis budgeted for the year. He appealed to chiefs to release land for development and to assist in community mobilization and revenue generation to achieve the development objectives of the communities.
