Olympic Committee Inaugurates Committees

Accra, (Greater Accra) 30 Oct.,

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) is to pursue a vigorous strategy that will see Ghana to the top in next years' Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. To make this a reality, the GOC is working in close collaboration with the media and other stakeholders without whose involvement the objectives could not be attained. Mr. B. T. Baba, GOC president said this at the inauguration of nine sub-committees of the GOC at which eleven honorary life members including President Jerry John Rawlings, the first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and Vice President Professor John Atta Mills, were inducted into office in Accra today. The committees include Games/Competitions, chaired by Mrs. Edith Haizel, Sports for all (Mr. Baba), Marketing and Sponsorship (Mr. Frank Appiah), Athletes (Dr. Sam Bugri) and Finance/investment advisory board (Dr. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey). Mr. Baba said Ghana does not only abound in soccer talents but also in all sporting disciplines, adding that the completion of the proposed Olympic Sports Stadium Complex at Nungua will attest to that fact. He called on all business communities to get involved to promote and develop sports. Mr. Sylvester Azantilow, a Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, who chaired the function said a sports bill is yet to be put before parliament for ractification. He called on the members to ensure that their activities conform with the Olympic Charter and the GOC constitution. The Minister later presented certificates to member for their contribution to sports and companies and organisations, including the Ghana News Agency which have sponsored the GOC over the past years. Among those present was Colonel George Brock, Acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council.
