Presidential task force to descend on tax evaders at the ports

The Special Operations Unit (SOU) has issued a stern warning to cheating importers who would be caught in underhand dealings of dire consequences if found culpable.

The task force which was formed at the presidency is to plug the loopholes and leakages in revenue collection and christened the Special Operations Unit and chaired by the chief of staff, Mr. Douglas Prosper Bani is poised at detecting discrepancies in taxes in the name of under invoicing.

According to the task force, ‘’it would descend heavily on importers who attempt to evade tax on duties of goods, to ensure the appropriate revenue mobilization and collection at the ports.’’

The task force was set up on May 23 this year at the instance of President John Dramani Mahama to help seal the loopholes in revenue mobilization.

Information picked up by Radio Gold points to the fact that the task force from next week would intensify its operations by arresting and prosecuting all who would be arrested in line with evasion of tax and under invoicing at the ports.

The SOU has so far identified some 30 companies at the Tema port, whose illegal activities have contributed to the huge loss of revenue to the State.

The SOU stated that no amount of intimidation would deter them from arresting tax evaders and ensuring sanity at the ports with regards to revenue collection.
