UPU supports Ghana Post

Universal Postal Union (UPU) has unconditionally approved an amount of $384,000 dollars to assist Ghana Post (GP) to centralize its sorting operations.

Abdulai Abdul-Rafiu, Managing Director of Ghana Post (GP), disclosed this when Dr. Omane Boamah, Minister of Communication, toured Ghana Post offices in Accra.

According to the manager, centralization would involve bringing all the sorting offices to GP to be monitored by CCTV cameras, adding that a number of generator sets would also be acquired to assist some major offices of Ghana Post.

He added that the major challenges facing Ghana Post is the infusion of technology into its operations.

“We have had bitter experiences in the past with the operations of what we used to call distance money transfer. Because that system was not run on a well solid technology, it was abused by outsiders as well as our own staff,” he said.

Abdul-Rafiu, called for a webbase platform for Ghana Post, saying “We see the owning of a platform as critical because it will enable us to start an e-commence business that will expand the current parcel business that the company is running.

He said Ghana Post is set to transform its key offices, which include Accra North and Adum, Kumasi into business centers by June, 2013. He therefore called for diversification of the company’s operations to take advantage of technologies to enrich the postal business.

In terms of revenue, Abdul-Rafiu said the company is hovering around GHC 26 million to GHC28 million. In 2010, revenue was 28 million, while in 2011 it reduced to 26.7m. The company is recovering with a provisional figure of 28.4m for 2012.
