'Wee' saga: Chris Brown deserves 10 years imprisonment

People who smoke or possess marijuana, popularly known as ‘wee', are breaking the law in Ghana, and are normally made to face the full rigours of the law, spending at least ten years in prison.

Ghana News Agency on March 26, 2009 reported: “Farmer jailed 15 years for possessing 'wee'”. “The Juaso Circuit Court presided over by Mr. S. K. Sarpong Appiah, has sentenced a 28-year-old farmer to 15 years' imprisonment in hard labour for possessing narcotic drugs. Kwame Sasu Hayford pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing narcotic drugs without authority”, the report said.

But interestingly an American hip pop star Chris Brown, performing on Tuesday night at the Ohene Djan Sports stadium in Accra, violated the country’s laws with impunity.

The rapper, performing on an rLG sponsored platform, threw caution and decorum to the wind when he openly endorsed the smoking of the banned substance ‘wee’ to the surprise of his audience, according to media reports.

Chris Brown’s act reportedly enraged some of his audience who started making gestures to register their displeasure.

The rapper asked if there were people in Ghana who smoke marijuana. He proceeded to say “if anybody’s tripping on you smoking weed, fuck them.”.

Organisers have come out to say that he didn’t smoke ‘wee’ but it was ‘slim cigar’. Even at that, isn’t smoking also prohibited?

In any case, he rolled and smoked marijuana live on stage to the surprise of dozens of music fans whilst security personnel stood by.

The question still lingering is which Ghanaian artist or entertainer could have walked free after using their platform to promote the smoking of ‘wee’ on that night?

Chris Brown came to Ghana, covered the music industry with a thick cloud of smoke and flew away.
