GIFEC declares 2013 year of consolidation

Kofi Attor, Administrator of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), said this year would be a year of consolidation for GIFEC.

He said a serious assessment would be carried out by group of professional to access the impact GIFEC had made over the past three years in the advancement of extending Information Communication Technology (ICT) to the un-served and underserved and served communities.

Mr Attoh, who was briefing the press in Accra at the weekend, said the assessment would enhance the work of the organization and also point out its short falls in order to better maintain its status.

He said GIFEC had built several cell sites in various rural communities that enabled people to make and received phone calls and that his outfit would focus on the community more this year.

“The modules are the Common Telecommunication Facility, the Last Mile Initiative, the Community Information Center, the ICT Capacity Building, the School Connectivity, the Rural Pay Phone, Easy Business Center and the Library Connectivity Projects.

“The others are the Post Office Connectivity, Disability Employment, Security Connectivity, e-Learning, e-Health, e-Fishing and the Public Education on Electromagnetic Fields Exposure and Health Projects,” he added.

He said GIFEC would also train some heads of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and also some staff of the Ministries Department and Agencies on basic computer and ICT skills to enhance fast delivery of works at their various offices.

Mr Attor said GIFEC was working with the Ghana Post on its Post Office and Community Information Centre Projects and that measures were put in place to ensure that the computers at the centers were not abuse.

He said GIFEC was building crime detective software for the Ghana Police Service to help reduce crime.

He added that video conferencing equipment for medical schools and College of Physicians that would link the school to the teaching hospitals in the country was also to be provided.
