Man, 19, arrested for posing as a woman

A 19-year-old man who posed as a woman and duped a man of GHC9,000 has been arrested by the police at Nsawam in the Eastern Region.

The suspect, Philip Ohene Antwi, a resident of Dansoman in Accra, was said to have disguised himself as a woman with the name Nana Akua and set up a blind date via telephone with his victim Anas Mamoud.

The Nsawam District Police Commander, Superintendent Akwasi Kankam-Boadu, told the Ghanaian Times that on August 27 last year, Mamoud saw a programme on television requesting for details of would-be partners for a relationship.

He said Mamoud sent his particulars, including his name and contact number, to the programme on the television for a female partner.

Superintendent Kankam-Boadu said Antwi later disguised himself as a woman and called Mamoud on his phone.

He said the two began dating on the phone until January this year when Mamoud contacted Antwi for assistance to buy a car.

He said Antwi told Mamoud that his father had a car that he was offering for sale.

Supt Kankam-Boadu said Antwi went to Mamoud’s house at Gyankrom near Nsawam and introduced himself as Randy, a cook for the supposed girlfriend’s father and convinced Mamoud to part with GHC9,000 to enable him secure the car for him.

He said Mamoud became suspicious when Antwi failed to bring the car to him. “Mamoud later called Antwi on his mobile phone and told him to come for money to purchase a different vehicle for him,” Supt. Kankam Boadu added.

He said Mamoud kept surveillance on Antwi’s activities and arrested him at Nsawam lorry Station and handed him over to the police.

He said during interrogation Antwi admitted the offence.

Supt Kankam-Boadu said the suspect would be put before court soon.
