Labourer jailed 10 years for possessing Indian hemp

A Tarkwa circuit court has sentenced Adu Kofi, a labourer, to 10 years imprisonment for illegally possessing Indian hemp.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that in July, last year, the accused was seen smoking dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, in the bush.

The prosecution said when Adu Kofi was arrested, by some neighbours, a search was conducted on him and dried leaves wrapped in a black polythene bag, suspected to be Indian hemp, were found in his packet.

Chief Insp. Amponsah said the accused was handed over to the police at Asankragwa.

He said Adu Kofi claimed he brought the dried leaves from someone at Akyekyere.

The prosecution said when the exhibit was sent to the police forensic laboratory for examination it was confirmed to be Indian hemp.
