CJA fights gov’t over tariffs

A political pressure group Committee for Joint Action (CJA) has warned government to desist from passing on huge utility bills of government agencies to the ordinary consumer.

According to the group, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) passes huge bills own by ministries, departments and agencies on to the public to pay without prior knowledge.

Speaking to an Accra based Joy FM on Tuesday, the convener of the group, Kwasi Adu stated that government must stop what he described as illegal practice or face their wrath.

“These ministries are not paying their bills, and because appointments of Director Generals and Chief Executive Officers of Electricity Company of Ghana are political, they are afraid to chase the ministries for these monies.

“You can imagine all these ministries, departments and agencies who are not paying their bills yet they make budget every year claiming they will pay this or that, where do the money go?” he queried.

He however lamented that the move on the part of government and the MDAs are cruel and should be condemn entirely.

“They fail to pay their own bills and then they come and tell consumers or the poor person should face increase tariff this is not fair”, he added.

Mr. Adu however cautioned that if government does not halt the trend his outfit would take all necessary action to change the situation.
