Help Age Ghana to build ultra modern centre for the aged

Help Age Ghana, a charitable organization that caters for the needs of the elderly is to commence the construction of an ultra-modern day-care centre for the aged.

The centre to be located at Teshie would comprise a clinic, a recreational centre, and a research centre for those who might need more information on ageing.

Speaking on Friday during a presentation to the organisation by Passion for Needy, a charitable organization, Mr Ebenezer Adjetey-Sorsey, Executive Director, Help Age Ghana, said the establishment of the new centre had been necessitated by the quest to reach more elderly people in the society.

He noted Help Age Ghana had formed volunteers’ group in 22 communities to pay the elderly people in those communities’ regular visits and to assist them in the performance of their house chores.

He said as part of its commitment to the elderly, the organisation regularly organized medical checkups for the elderly and also paid the medical bills of those whose drugs were not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme.

He cited inadequate resources to cater for the organisation's activities as its main challenge.

Mr Adjetey-Sorsey said although Help Age Ghana was affiliated to Help Age International, it did not in any way receive financial assistance from them and that it depended on the benevolence of corporate organizations and individuals.

“With the exception of the three northern regions, we have our offices in all the other seven regions in the country,” he said.

Presenting the items, Mrs Janet Torgbor El-Aschker, a co-chairperson, Passion for Needy noted that the presentation was in fulfillment of a promise made to Help Age Ghana last year to regularly support it.

Items presented included a satellite dish, one flat screen television, 20 bags of rice, two cartons of tomato paste, two cartons of mackerel, two cartons of cooking oil, two packs of toilet roll, 50 loaves of bread and 10 bags of maize from the NGO’s farmland at Pra Ewusi in the Central Region, all valued at GHC2,650.

Mrs Maame Araba Dadson, who is another co-chairperson of the NGO, expressed her appreciation to Prophet TB Joshua for establishing Passion for Needy, adding that the NGO would make more donations this year.

She said the NGO would soon venture into fish farming in addition to farming at Pra Ewusi as part of its decision to reach out to more people with food items.
