Preserve Ghana’s history – Egbert Faibille advocates

The Editor of the Ghanaian Observer, Egbert Faibille has called for the establishment of an institution whose sole aim is to preserve the artefacts and archive the history of Ghana.

Speaking on Citi FM’s weekend news analysis programme, The Big Issue, Mr Faibille lamented, “where are the official vehicles of Kwame Nkrumah [Ghana’s first President], the things Nkrumah used, the things Busia used, the things Limann used, the things Rawlings used?

According to Mr. Faibille, these historical artefacts should be gathered and preserved for the benefit of the unborn generations of Ghana and also a a source of tourist attraction.

The lawyer added, “what the President should be riding in on 6th March is the vehicle that Kwame Nkrumah used. The Americans have everything but check the things their Presidents ride in when they are dead and they are going to bury them, when they are being taken to go and swear in; they ride these vehicles."

“It’s about time we spoke about the archivist and the history because Ghana’s Museums and Monuments Board is in a deplorable state. They have one or two computers and when it rains, the rain actually falls on the history of this country,”

Mr Faibille pointed out that "we ought to begin to have a culture of getting our leaders to write. I think that, and it doesn't necessarily have to be a law, but it should be a direction at the Presidency that the very first day you step in office as Vice President of this Republic or as President of this Republic, start taking down your notes as to what you want published about your time in office."

"It helps in institutional memory, it helps even those who aspire to that office to learn from their experiences."
