Police deny pro-Gbagbo training camps in Ghana

The Western regional Police has downplayed a UN security report that says exiles loyal to ex-Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo have pitched camp in Ghana to launch an attack on President Alassane Quattara’s government.

The report, cited by Reuters News Agency said the ex-combatants have been holding series of meetings, some in the Western Regional Capital Takoradi, to hatch their plan to attack.

The report seems to give credence to Ivorian authorities’ accusations that Ghana is harbouring forces who are planning to overthrow the Alassane Quattara government.

But speaking to radio XYZ News, the Western regional Police Commander, DCOP Ransford Ninsen said the report is at best a rumour.

“We have been patrolling the whole of the Western region and we have not come across any such base or camp that they are talking about so they have to tell us where that camp is.

“But we will continue to investigate and find out whether this allegation is true. The CID and the BNI are all going round trying to find whether these allegations are true”.
