WFP supports Lawra flood victims

Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper West Regional Minister, has presented relief items to 14 communities that were affected by floods in the Lawra District of the region, recently.

The items, which comprised maize, beans, oil and salt, were donated by the World Food Programme (WFP) upon an urgent request by the Regional Minister to individuals and organisations to assist victims of the disaster.

The floods, which destroyed about 502 acres of farms and affected 3,082 persons was caused by spillage of the Bagre Dam in neighbouring Burkina Faso, and compounded by heavy rains in the region, this year.

Alhaji Sulemana, presenting the items at Dikpe, a community that was also hit by asked the National Disaster Management Organisation to ensure the distribution of the items to the flood victims.

He commended the WFP for responding quickly to his request for assistance to help mitigate the plight of the flood victims, and expressed hope that more support would come from other organisations, and individuals.

Mr. Samson Abu, Lawra District Chief Executive praised the Regional Minister and WFP for supporting the victims, and advised the people to relocate to safer places in order to avoid the vagaries of floods.
