UEW appeals for more support

Authorities of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) have appealed to the government to make a special budgetary provision to the University to enable it to enhance its capacity to excel.

The Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Professor Akwasi Asabre-Ameyaw made the appeal at the 17th matriculation of the University in Winneba at the weekend.

A total of 2,537 fresh students were matriculated to undertake degree, diploma and certificate programes at the University.

Professor Asabre-Ameyaw said, “The government subvention to the university has significantly gone up but this is mainly so due to significant increases in personal emolument”.

He said roads on the various campuses remained the worst among public universities and therefore appealed to the government to come to the aid of UEW to put those roads in good shape.

The Vice-Chancellor said the University currently ran over 70 undergraduate programmes and a similar number of postgraduate programmes,

These programmes are offered through either the regular, sandwich or distance mode under nine faculties, two schools and an institute, he said, adding that there are forty academic departments.

“The government will need to pay particular attention to the University to enable us to put up the needed infrastructure, procure the needed equipment and other relevant resources to increase access without sacrificing quality”.

He said there were quite a large number of teachers professionally trained who remained unemployed even though quite a large number of classrooms in the countryside were without teachers.

The VC appealed to the government to do everything possible to put the graduate teachers in the classrooms to address the teacher shortfalls.

Professor Asabre-Ameyaw urged the new students to avoid pilfering and take their studies seriously to enable them achieve good results.

The VC later in the day matriculated 137 students at the Ajumako Campus to do degree courses in Twi, Fante and Ewe.

The Registrar of the University, Mr. C. Y. Akwaa-Mensah administered the Matriculation Oath to the freshers.
