Cannabis Bust: Arthur K. calls for security of tenure for NACOB officers

A leading member of the NPP, Dr Arthur Kennedy is calling for security-of-tenure for all heads of security agencies as way of dealing with the drug menace in the country.

He says such a move will prevent frequent changes of security heads anytime there is a change of government.

Commenting on last week’s seizure of cannabis at Heathrow Airport in Britain on a plane from Ghana, Dr. Arthur Kennedy, who has written a book on the drug menace in West African said political parties should not be blamed for the increasing drug trade since the drug barons in South America are under pressure to change their strategies.

He believes having security of tenure will bring professionalism in the country’s security agencies and that without it, the security services will be riddled with people who would want to find ways to secure their futures financially.

Dr. Kennedy also took swipe at the sacking of the senior official indicted in the latest cannabis seizure. the Executive Director of NACOB, Mr Akrasi Sarpong, told XYZ News on Saturday that a senior officer who ordered his subordinates to go home during the period when the cannabis was transported, has been sacked.

Dut Dr. Kennedy disagrees with the decision. He said “I think that firing people is a bit premature. We should interdict people who we think were involved and then when we know the full fact, we should apply the law vigorously.”

He is also calling for a law to help regulate campaign financing, which he believes will help monitor the cash flow into the coffers of political parties.

“I am very, very worried about the possible interconnection between drugs and narcotics and even as we can see in Nigeria, terrorism.”
