Founder's Day fallout: Sekou questions sister's locus

Dr. Sekou Nkrumah, the youngest son of Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has taken a swipe at his sister, Samia Nkrumah, for laying a wreath on behalf of the children and family of former president during the commemoration of the Founder’s Day Friday.

According to Dr Sekou Nkrumah, who was conspicuously missing at the function, the fact that his sister is the chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) does not give her the right to represent the children of Dr Nkrumah at state functions.

He said neither government nor her sister told him of any event to mark his father’s birth.

“Who took that decision that Samia should represent the family? That is the question that I’m asking and I’m saying that if she is representing the CPP, I don’t have a problem with that,” he averred.

He said if Ms Samia Nkrumah is representing the family, then the family has a right to determine who represents its members.

Dr Sekou Nkrumah also expressed worry at the appearance of Dr. Onsi Nkrumah at state functions as a son of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He said Nkrumah only has four recognized children of which Onsi is not a member.

He reiterated his earlier call for Dr. Onsi to undergo a DNA test to prove that he is truly the son of Ghana’s first president before holding himself up as one of them, saying “he cannot just stand somewhere and so that you are Nkrumah’s son or daughter. That is unacceptable.”
