Ghost names in Parliament

The number of registered Members of Parliament (MPs) who attended Parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday has surprisingly been bloated from 45 to 118 as at Thursday, September, 20.

It would be recalled that Hon. Doe Adjaho, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament suspended proceedings on Wednesday because the House could not form a quorum as required by law.

It was however recorded that just 45 out of the 230 MPs were present on that fateful day after a head count.

Parliamentary proceedings were adjourned after Hon. Isaac Asiamah had raised the issue of quorum.

Interestingly, the parliamentary register on Thursday showed that more than 100 MPs turned up for work instead of the initial 45 members who were recorded.

The development, according to reports, has raised lots of concerns in the House as to how come the 45 MPs registered, increased to 118.

Members of Parliament are required to attend proceedings in Parliament till after 21 days to enable the House to pass the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 78, which seeks to create 45 new constituencies into law.

The House is expected to work on Saturday due to the Founder's Day which fell on Friday.

The Founder's Day, which is declared a national holiday, is set aside to mark the birth of Ghana's first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
