Vodafone Ghana Foundation And Joy Fm Inaugurates Ultra Modern Library Facility For Ga East District

Ghana, Accra 28 June 2012: Vodafone Ghana Foundation has built an ultra modern library facility in Asofan, near Pokuase in support of the second phase of Joy Fm’s Read 100 project. The library will serve young pupils between the ages of eight and fourteen in a cluster of five schools in and around the Asofan area and will allow them access to textbooks and story books during and after school.
Explaining Vodafone Ghana Foundation’s motivation to support the project, Director of External Affairs at Vodafone Ghana, Patrick Boateng said ‘Our core mandate at Vodafone Ghana Foundation is to partner with community groups and organisations to respond to social and economic development issues in the country. Education, particularly reading, is fundamental to the social and economic development of the country. Access to books is one of the many strategies we can use to bring knowledge to the youth which is why we support the construction of libraries at central locations around the country’.
He noted that ‘the reading habits of the general Ghanaian public, particularly school going children have seen a steady decline over the last couple of decades. One of the reasons for this decline is the lack of sustained investment in libraries where students can access books to read to expand their horizons, improve their vocabulary and open their minds. The responsibility of reversing this unfortunate trend lies with everyone, including corporate institutions. We must act now for the benefit of the future of our children.
He commended Joy Fm’s efforts to re-ignite the youth’s passion for reading, adding that ‘we are proud to be making this significant investment in our future leaders at this time because the values of the Read 100 Project speak to the values of the Foundation, which aims to support partners who seek to support our communities through the provision of innovative services and support systems to marginalised communities’.
Other partners of the Read 100 Project include Ghana Education Service, Ghana Publishers Association, Ghana Library Board, Municipal/District Assemblies, Community Leaders and the Chiefs and people of the beneficiary communities.
