Catholic teachers’ welfare scheme brings enormous benefits

A welfare scheme established by Catholic teachers in the Ashanti Region has become a showpiece having procured over 200 building plots for development into housing units for the members.

The plots are located at Abrankese in Bosomtwe and Atwima-Wiredu in the Atwima-Nwabiagya Districts.

Mrs Agnes Adu-Boahen, the Scheme’s Board Chairman, said its total assets shot up to GH¢3,535,096.91, last year, from the 2010 figure of GH¢2,537,457.96.

Its net income during the period also stood at GH¢248,037.86. Compared with the previous figure with a dip of GH¢33,841.87.

Mrs Adu-Boahen was addressing the second triennial general meeting of the members in Kumasi.

The scheme was set up in year 2005 and has a total membership of 3,469 teachers.

Mrs Adu-Boahen invited all Catholic teachers in the region to join it for their own benefit.

The Scheme’s Administrator, Mr. Gabriel Agyare-Gyamfi said they would continue to adopt best practices and ensure transparency to protect the members’ funds.

He said they were working hard to acquire a permanent and more spacious office to enhance their operations.

Mr. Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, the Regional Director of Education, lauded the teachers’ initiative noting that it was significantly helping to inculcate in them the culture of savings.

He reminded workers to plan well towards their retirement.

One of the founding members, Sir Dave Anane Druyeh, praised the board and management for the good job they were doing and urged them on to work hard to sustain its impressive growth performance.**
