Biometric registration is proceeding smoothly in the Western Region

The biometric registration of voters began on schedule at designated polling stations on Saturday and is proceeding as planned, Mr Stephen Opoku-Mensah, the Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) told the GNA in an interview at Sekondi.

He said reports reaching his office indicate people are patronizing the registration exercise and though the process is slow, it is expected to pick up in the next few days as in the pilot registration exercise.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said there have been technical problems with the registration equipment and in some places, printers and computers were not working but these problems have been rectified.

He said about 1.5 million people are expected to be registered in the region because there was 1.3 million registered voters in 2010.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said some 4,116 registration officials have been engaged for the registration exercise in the region.**
