It’s a shame we can’t guarantee clean water to Ghanaians 55 years after independence…Nana Akomea

The communications director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has bemoaned the state of the country’s waters as Ghana joins the United Nations to mark World Water Day today.

He said, “it’s a shame the situation of water and the provision of water in this country”, and blames the country’s leaders for the water insecurity that faces Ghanaians.

“Air, water and food, biologically, these are the three ingredients that you need to survive. If you don’t have these, you will die. Water is very essential but in this country, we are not doing well when it comes to water delivery. It’s a shame on all of us, especially our leaders that 55 years after independent, we cannot guarantee clean pipe-borne water to every citizen.”

Nana Akomea was speaking in an interview on Xfm 95.1 on World Water Day, Thursday, March 22, 2012.

The Okaikoi South MP also decried the high cost of treated water which most people in the rural areas have to depend on since their sources of water have been polluted by galamsey operators.

“Even the villages, now because of galamsey, which is not being regulated, the water that they drink in the villages are all not drinkable anymore. They are all now resorting to sachet water, which is very expensive”.

The theme for this year’s World Water Day is “Water and Food Security: Call for Solutions.”

The theme is to draw worldwide attention to the relationship between water and food security focusing on water scarcity, which already affects more than 40 per cent of the people on earth and is limiting the ability of farmers to produce enough food to eat or earn a living.
