W/R GPRTU withdraws recognition of national executives

Takoradi, Feb. 29, GNA – The Western Regional Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on Tuesday withdrew its recognition of the national executives of the union.

The decision is to compel the national executives to refund a total amount of 970,000 Ghana Cedis paid to them by members of the regional branch of the union for the purchase of various types of vehicles between 2008 and 2009.

At a regional executive council meeting at Takoradi, Mr Isaac Esau, Regional Chairman of the Union, said for almost fours years, the vehicles have not been delivered and the national executives have not refunded the money to the members.

He said the matter is before a Sekondi High Court and so far, the national executives have refunded 36,000 Ghana cedis leaving a balance of 610,000 Ghana Cedis.

He said the national executives would be recognized again by the regional branch when they refunded all money paid to them by the members.

In a resolution adopted after the meeting, 52 out of the 65 branches of the union in the region, said they supported the High Court order that until the national executives refund all monies paid to them by the members with interest they cannot interfere in matters affecting the regional secretariat of the union.
