Price of Ga Kenkey Increases Whilst Size Shrinks – Article 230355

Following the Ghana News Agency (GNA) report on the above subject on February 20, 2012, the Statistics, Research and Information Directorate, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, conducted a quick survey on Ga Kenkey prices in various locations in Accra and Tema on 12th February, 2012.

Results varied between the localities and tend to show a shift from the GH¢0.40 and GH¢0.50 to GH¢0.50 and GH¢0.70 balls of kenkey in most places. The survey showed that majority of the kenkey joints sold a ball of kenkey at GH¢0.50 (see attached kenkey price levels in different localities). Three (3) kenkey joints in Nungua, Lapaz and Tema had few quantities of kenkey being sold at GH¢0.70 and GH¢1.00.

Although maize production for 2011 was less than expected due to inadequate rainfall and erratic distribution, the recent sharp price increases of maize is attributed more to speculative marketing as majority of traders are keeping the commodity and expecting high prices in the lean production season of 2012.

Maize prices will be stabilized and decline when majority of the producers release the commodity and new maize get onto the markets by May, 2012.
