Fans shun Black Stars on arrival

A crest-fallen Black Stars contingent arrived at the Kotoka International Airport yesterday afternoon via Starbow airline after a failed attempt to win the 28th edition of the African Nations Cup which ended in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea last night.

The Black Stars were heavily tipped as pre tournament favorites alongside the Elephants of Ivory Coast but the Stars fizzled out losing 1-0 to Zambia in the semi finals.

As feared, only a handful of supporters were at the Kotoka airport to welcome the team from the tournament.

The few supporters who were wearing T-shirts with the inscription “Well done Dede and Jordan” appear to have come to support only the Ayew brothers who performed well at the tournament.

Striker Asamoah Gyan who missed a crucial penalty in the game against Zambia was not with the team as he preferred to travel to his base in the United Arab Emirates.

Calls have been growing for the GFA to sack head Coach Goran Stevanovic who had vowed to resign if the Stars failed to reach the final or win the trophy. The GFA is however yet to make any pronouncement with regards to the future of the Coach.

To make matters worse, Ghana failed to win the third place play-offs against Mali on Saturday evening.

Two goals from Cheick Tidiane Diabate delivered a 2-0 win over 10-man Ghana. Ghana's misery included the dismissal of central defender Isaac Vorsah for a second yellow card just past the hour mark.

A dispirited Ghana saw Vorsah become their third player to be sent off at this year's finals.

Ghana, who had beaten Mali 2-0 in the group phase last month, thought they had scored just after halftime but Sulley Muntari's effort was ruled offside.

Meanwhile, this is the first time a domestic airline has been contracted to airlift the National team after a major tournament.

Officials of Starbow, the leading domestic airline in Ghana which brought the Stars home say they are happy to be associated with the National team despite their inability to win the ultimate.
