We’ll Defend Ghana’s Scarce Resources With our Blood-AFAG

The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) a pressure
group aligned to the opposition has vowed to defend the scarce resources of
Ghana with the last drop of their blood. They accused the Mills led NDC
administration of displaying a disposition and posture which gives credence to
the fact that they are not prepared to listen to the plight of the ordinary
Ghanaian but to set their own questions, mark the same and give themselves an
excellent mark of 80%.

They were speaking at a press conference at the SSNIT guest
house in Accra today to announce a planned street protest dubbed ‘ATTA WAYO
DEMONSTRATION’ to draw the ruling NDC government’s attention to what they call
‘unrivalled
corruption and high taxes’ in the past three years.

‘The most strange and nauseating aspect of all these is that
from president Mills down to the last person in their communication team, for whatever
reason best known to them, wants all Ghanaians to believe that we are
experiencing the so-called ‘Better Ghana’ and that life is better under Prof.
Mills than any other government in our political history. This is sheer propaganda.
Let Prof. Mills be told that you cannot govern a nation on propaganda.
Ghanaians are sinking under the load of his numerous high taxes and unrivalled
corruption’, the statement added.

Abu Ramadan, outspoken spokesperson for the group who read
the statement said several instances of corruption including what he claimed
and called the WOYOME-GATE scandal where about GH570billion old currency was
paid out to one Alfred Woyome who they further claimed had no contract with the
government of Ghana can be cited to prove their point. He said AFAG’s interest
is how all this money is returned to the consolidated fund with all those found
culpable made to face the full rigors of the law.
AFAG also accused Mr. Kwame Peprah, board chairman of SSNIT
of complacency in the sale of the company’s shares of 61.1% in The Trust Bank
(TTB)- a bank AFAG claimed made a 50% profit in 2011 more than the 2010 margin-
making it a profitable venture- and asked why such a business should be sold
out based on the discretion on one man. They asked President Mills to
investigate and bring Mr. Kwame Peprah to book saying ‘this massive scandal at
SSNIT has the potential to jeopardize the future of the Ghanaian worker’s
social security and worsen the plight of pensioners’.

AFAG announced Wednesday January 25th 2012 as date
for the ‘ATTA-WAYO DEMO’ and called on well-meaning Ghanaians to join them.
