GFA Boss is Shocked

Ghana midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng has retired from international football with Ghana at the age of just 24.

“The Ghana Football Association has received a letter from player Kevin-Prince Boateng on his decision to resign from the senior national team,” read a statement.

“According to Kevin, the physical demands of playing for both club and country at high levels are taking a toll on his health.

“The player also explained that in order to remain healthy and stave off any injuries, he has consulted his doctors and family over the matter.

“He has decided to take the decision to excuse himself from national duties since he is on a special training programme that he has to interrupt to honour national invitations.

“The Ghana Football Association is yet to take a position on the decision of Kevin-Prince Boateng.”

The midfielder has only won nine caps for Ghana after previously playing for Germany, the country of his birth, at Under-21 level.

Boateng, now in his second season at San Siro, reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup Finals with the Black Stars.

Ghana FA President Kwasi Nyantakyi is in disbelief over the decision of Kevin-Prince Boateng to retire from international football.

The 24-year-old has written to the Ghana FA to make his decision official, stating his inability to cope with the physical exertions of international football as his reason.

The news appears to have infuriated a lot of Ghanaians considering Boateng’s lackluster attitude towards Black Stars call-ups after the 2010 World Cup.

However, Nyantakyi who had visited the AC Milan midfielder and had assured of the player’s return to the team after he missed crucial games has expressed shock upon receiving the dreaded letter.

“I was very surprised, I least expected something like this to happen especially at this time very close to the Nations Cup,” Nyantakyi who also doubles as the chairman of the Black Stars management committee told Joy Sports.

“It has also come at a time we were banging on the availability of all our key players including Kevin.
“This came as a thunderbolt and it was not taken lightly at all, it really shook all of us to the core through our bone marrow.”
German-born Boateng was cleared to play for the Black Stars weeks before Ghana’s second campaign at a senior world cup in South Africa.
His excellent showing at the mundial earned him a dream move to Italian giants AC Milan but his subsequent attitude to national team call-ups over a perceived rift with Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic heightened doubts over his commitment to the national course.
