14 persons apply for GOC elections

Accra, Oct. 20, GNA – Fourteen (14) persons have at the end of filing of nominations applied for positions unto the Executive Board of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) for its Congress scheduled for October 29 in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.

Information gathered by the GNA Sports indicates that 14 persons had submitted their nominations as at the October, 19, (17h00 GMT) deadline set by the Guidelines Committee of the GOC.

This is contrary to threats of a boycott by the Presidents of the National Sports Associations/Federations in protest over what they claimed are unfamiliar electoral procedures.

Personnel at the GOC Secretariat, however, opted for silence regarding the identity of the applicants citing orders from above.

GNA Sports can meanwhile confirm that Reverend Emmanuel Nikoi, President of the Netball Association of Ghana (NAG) is among one of the people who has applied for one of the 10 positions to be vied for at the elective General Assembly.

Another applicant, who was yet to submit his nomination form as the deadline was almost up, was identified as Nii Quaye Kumah, Executive Member of Ghana Hockey Association (GHA).

According to the GOC, they will make public the lists of applicants by the close of the week after a careful scrutiny of the nominations forms.

The rest of the positions are five representatives from the National Federations affiliated to International Federations in the Olympic programme, three other members elected by Congress, one from a non-Olympic Sport and one affiliated Associations.
