Media Launch Of Anlo Education Trust Fund Scholarships

The Anlo Education Trust Fund (AETF) has launched its scholarship scheme for needy students on Wednesday, 28 September, 2011 in its constituent area of Anlo. The Scheme, which strategically targets recipients from the Keta Municipality in its initial roll-out, is intended to help improve the quality of education by providing scholarships to qualified students as well as support to school infrastructure development and resourcing in Anlo.

In a statement issued by the Board Chairman of the Trust, Prof. Victor Gadzekpo, and read on his behalf by Mr. Kodzo Chapman, the Secretary, the AETF noted with concern recent media reports of the poor BECE performance of candidates in the last Basic Education Certificate Examinations conducted by the WAEC in which the pass rate of students was incredibly below expectations. The AETF intends to join other stakeholders in seeking a redress to this unfortunate situation, which has engulfed the delivery of education nationwide but more particularly, Anlo Traditional Area.

Prof. Gadzekpo, who is President of the Central University College, said with educational costs especially at secondary and tertiary education levels continuing to increase faster than family incomes, the Anlo Education Trust Fund will provide increased education and skills training access to needy students with a targeted priority for the Sciences and Technology.
The Scholarship covers the cost of tuition and boarding facilities for residential students.

In addressing the issue of education, the scheme, strategically includes support for vocational and apprenticeship training in order to ensure that students who intend to go into skills training receive the necessary support. This is a departure from the focus on academic pursuits to the exclusion of equally important but often overlooked areas of knowledge acquisition and skills training that are relevant to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
Carefully, planned and structured, the Scheme is gender sensitive in terms of the selection criteria for eligibility and has a rights-based approach which ensures that the special needs and vulnerability status of its constituents are considered during eligibility assessments.
Initially, eligible candidates are directed to purchase application forms from the Assembly Members of their communities. The forms, which detail the application procedure, should be submitted to the AETF through the designated Assembly Members and District Education offices.
