Midwives appeal for walkways for pregnant women

Koforidua, Sept. 30, GNA - Midwives at the Koforidua Zongo Health Centre have appealed to the New Juaben Municipal Assembly and the Zongo community to help construct a walkway at the Health Centre to link the Out-Patients Department (OPD), the maternity unit and their quarters.

They said that would help prevent the situation where women in labour had to wade through flood waters to the maternity unit whenever it rained.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua on Friday, Ms Esther Atiah, Acting Head of the Centre, said the area is marshy and gets flooded whenever it rains.

Therefore, women in labour had to wade through the water to the maternity unit to deliver.

She said at times the women had to be carried shoulder high by relatives and this is dangerous to the health of pregnant women.

Ms Atia said midwives also had to walk through the flood waters sometimes at knee level at night to attend to women in labour.
