Road accidents reduce in Tema

Tema, Aug 22, GNA - Road accidents within the Tema Metropolis reduced from 623 in January-June 2010 to 488 from January-June this year.

Superintendent Daniel Ansong-Dankyi, Tema Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Police Service, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, said 72 people lost their lives through the accidents from January to June last year.

The figure, he said, reduced to 53 during the same period this year. Supt. Ansong-Dankyi said injuries involved in the accidents also reduced from 501 to 438 within the same period in 2011. He advised drivers to observe traffic regulations and avoid drunk driving, over speeding and wrong overtaking, and endeavour to be defensive on the roads to help reduce accidents to the barest minimum. The Regional MTTU Commander urged pedestrians to walk on pavements and shoulders of roads by facing on-coming vehicles.
