Upper Manya District lacks self-help spirit- DCE

Asesewa (E/R), June 30, GNA - Mr Joseph Tetteh Angmor, Upper Manya Krobo District Chief Executive (DCE), has described as worrying the lack of communal spirit towards development projects in the area.

He said the situation was an indication that the assembly members could not win the support and confidence of their people.

Addressing the first ordinary meeting of the first session of the assembly at Asesewa on Thursday, Mr Angmor appealed to the assembly members to lead their people to initiate projects that are dear to them.

"It is time we realize that the development of our communities cannot be wholly left in the hands of the assembly or the government (alone) but should be a shared responsibility," he said.

Mr Angmor said with the exception of Plan Ghana and Hunger Project Ghana, the area had no support from non-governmental organisations to support their developmental efforts.

"I will therefore urge you to ensure that your work as assembly members would, most importantly include the initiation of development projects and programmes in your communities with the total support of your community members".

Mr Angmor said within a relatively short period of time from 2009 to the present, the assembly was able to chalk phenomenal success with regard to developmental projects and programmes.

He mentioned some of the projects as the construction of a modern 48- unit office complex to accommodate all the departments in the district.

Other projects include the renovation of a four-unit classroom block at Methodist Junior High School (JHS), renovation of a three-unit classroom block at District Assembly JHS at Asesewa and the construction of a six- unit classroom block at Ternguanya.

The rest were the construction of 10 new school buildings at Nyakumase, Bormase Whenya, Kumakuma, Kwabia Teryi, Akotoe and Esuom Manya.

On sanitation Mr Angmor said the assembly had almost completed the construction of a two-unit 10-seater KVIP toilet at Akateng at the cost of GH¢39,773.00 and a slaughter house at Asesewa valued at GH¢42,465.830.

Mr Joseph Kodjo Nomo, Presiding Member of the assembly, reminded the assembly members that their main task was to see to the overall development of the district.

He therefore entreated them to put aside all personal interests and political affiliations in the course of their deliberations and tackle all issues holistically.

"Let us not forget that we are here for Upper Manya Krobo District and not for any political party and therefore put all political affiliations aside in our discussions," he said.

Mr Nomo appealed to the Executive and Legislator to as a matter of urgency take a critical consideration of the plight of assembly members and come out with modalities that would provide them with remuneration every month.
