NHC unhappy with indecent or intemperate utterances in media

Kumasi, March 23, GNA - The National House of Chiefs (NHC) has expressed worry over the increasing use of indecent or intemperate language in both the electronic and print media and said this was causing a lot of apprehension in the society.

Wulugu Naba Pugansoa Naa Professor John Si Nabila, President of the House said certain statements which were made on the airwaves did cause a great deal of concern.

He said the unfortunate events of 1994 in Rwanda should serve as a lesson to the nationus.

Wulugu Naba Pugansoa Nabila made the sentiments of the chiefs known at their first general meeting for the year in Kumasi on Wednesday.

As fathers of the nation, the chiefs appealed to all Ghanaians irrespective of political, religious or ethnic differences to ensure some level of civility.

"We have chosen the democratic path with political pluralism as the central pillar and we should therefore be accommodating and see ourselves as one family of the nation Ghana and not enemies due to our political differences," he said. Wulugu Naba Pugansoa Nabila it was important for all, especially politicians, to avoid acts that were likely to fuel tension in the country.

The NHC also raised concern about the considerable change of the country's climate, which was affecting economic output and livelihoods =96 a real threat to Ghana's development prospects. Wulugu Naba Pugansoa Nabila said to assist the chiefs and queens to better appreciate the problem, the Environment, Science and Technology Ministry, would be organizing a sensitization workshop for them in Kumasi on March 25.

He appealed to members of the House to seize the opportunity to make meaningful contribution to efforts at tackling the menace. The NHC President informed the chiefs that data collection under the phase one of the Project to ascertain and codify customary laws relating to land and family law had been completed in the pilot areas. The project was started in 2008 and was funded by the GTZ/Support for Decentralization Programme (SfDR). He announced that plans were underway to launch the NHC's Endowment Fund to support its development projects and activities.
