German Development Cooperation presents DVDs to Ministry

Accra, March 21, GNA - The German Development Cooperation (GIZ) on Monday presented recorded DVDs on way forward for the country's decentralisation system to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD).

The GIZ had gathered information on how Ghana's decentralisation process should be done in terms of beefing up the human resource at the district assemblies to improve the system. Dr Volker Monikes, DIZ's Programme Manager of Support for Decentralisation Reform (SfDR) who presented the equipment to the ministry, expressed satisfaction about the country's decentralisation system and pledged Germany's support to help further improve the system.

He said the DVDs told stories of how Ghana's decentralisation should be done and that conditions at the national level for effective local governance had improved.

Further, the capacities of institutions at local and regional levels had also improved and aroused political participation in the decision-making process. Dr Monikes said the DVDs would help the Ministry, which is the implementing agency for its programme, 93Support for Decentralisation Reforms", to appreciate the need to ensure the physical decentralisation process in terms of human resource. Nana Oduro Kwarteng, Chief Director of the MLGRD who received the DVDs, urged the country's development partners to continue to support the decentralisation process.

He said the country had gone far in ensuring that local governance was sent to the doorsteps of the people and expressed the hope that the DVDs would help to further improve the system. 21 March 11
