GES requests teachers to resume work immediately

Accra, March 15, GNA - The Ghana Education Service (GES) on Tuesday requested all teachers to report to work immediately. It has, therefore, directed Regional, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education to furnish Headquarters with a list of all teachers, who failed to report for work, by Friday March 18, 2011.

A statement issued in Accra by Mr Charles Parker-Allotey, Head of Public Relations said, 93Any teacher who is found to have absented him or herself without justification by close of work on Friday, March 18, 2011 would be deemed to have vacated post."

It said an agreement was reached with the negotiating parties made up of all the recognised labour unions within the GES. These were Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) on one side, and the Government team comprising Ministers of Finance and Economic Planning, Employment and Social Welfare, and Education.

Others were GES, Controller and Accountant General's Department and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on the other on Friday March 11, 2011.

The statement said this culminated in the leadership of the Unions calling off the strike action embarked on by teachers. "Teachers by this condition are expected to be in the classrooms," it added. 15 March 11
