MILLS MUST EXPLAIN DEPOSIT OF 3 MILLION DOLLARS AND
\ 200,000 EUROS IN FOREIGN ACCOUNTS

The Centre for Truth and Social Justice is calling on President of Ghana Mr John
Atta Mills to explain the deposit of 3 million dollars in a Swiss bank account as well
as the deposit of 500,000 dollars in an account in Spain. This is alleged to have
occurred during his recent visit to Bern, Switzerland, on a supposed state visit. The
Centre for Truth and Social justice is at a loss to understand why the president, who
told his people that he was on a mission to solicit for funds for projects would seek to
take money out of the country and deposit in foreign accounts in Switzerland, a
country noted for its secrecy and a reputation as a haven for hiding monies stolen
from African countries by corrupt African leaders.
Sources close to the seat of government have told the centre that part of the money is
a gift to some members of government at the presidency, including the President by
some Chinese businessmen for helping them secure land for a supposed new airport to
be built outside Accra and also a loan which was sourced from a company in brazil to
support road construction projects.
At a time that African governments are being encouraged to be transparent and build
systems that ensure accountability and trust, it seems strange that a president of a third
world country would take the hard earned foreign exchange of a country like Ghana,
with its emerging democratic credentials and deposit it in banks in Switzerland and
Spain. The Spanish angle raises eyebrows because according to our sources some
time ago some members of government including Mr Enoch Mensah, a Minister of
Employment and a close ally of President Mills visited the country on supposed
private business. One would like to believe they have nothing to do with the opening
of a certain deposit account in which 200,000 Euros has been deposited.
The Centre of Truth and Social Justice has sought clarification from the bank in Spain
but officials there would not comment. Further enquires were made at the Ministry of
Finance in Madrid but our contact drew a blank .
The Centre for Truth and Social Justice is very concerned about the increasing
financial traffic involving some members of the Ghanaian government and their
activities in Switzerland, Spain, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, the Czech Republic,
South Africa and South Korea. The Centre appeals to the country's Ministry of
Finance to build transparent and monitoring systems to prevent the misuse of public
funds and seek to prosecute anyone found acting in an improper manner.
