Canada downs Ghana in women’s U17 opener

ARIMA, Trinidad & Tobago — Canada opened the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a 1-0 victory over African hopeful Ghana on Monday.

Although Ghana often dazzled, it was Canada which came away with the all-important three points in the match in Group D, referred to as the “group of death.”

Haisha Cantave scored Canada’s 54th-minute goal on a corner kick.

Sabrina D’Angelo earned the shutout for Canada, which next sees action against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday. Canada, which finished on top of its CONCACAF qualifying competition, wraps up the opening round against Brazil on Monday.

Ghana next meets Brazil on Thursday.
