NPP democratic structures solid, says Ato Arthur

Cape Coast, Aug. 9, GNA - The emphatic victory by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a clear indication that the internal democratic structures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are firm and solid, Nana Ato Arthur, former Central Regional Minister, has said.

Nana Akufo-Addo won a resounding victory in all the 19 constituencies of the Central Region, securing 76.23% of the total votes cast to come out as the party's presidential candidate for the 2012 general election, while Mr Alan Kyerematen, his close contender, had 22.22%.

The three other contestants, Professor Kwabena Frempong Boateng, former Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mr Isaac Osei, Member of Parliament for Subin and Reverend John Kodua, a lawyer, had a total of 1.65% of the votes cast in the region.

Nana Ato Arthur in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Cape Coast on Sunday said the massive win indicated that the party was solidly behind Nana Akufo-Addo and that the campaign for the 2012 elections "will start right away".

He therefore urged all supporters as well as sympathizers to close their ranks and focus on wining the next election.

Some Party supporters interviewed were of the view that Saturday's elections served as a basis for the party to forge ahead in unity and work hard towards the next election.
