Government to resettle Rawlings

Accra, July 9, GNA - Government said on Friday that it is doing everything within its powers to properly settle the former First Family whose Ridge residence was destroyed by fire on February 14.

A statement signed by Mr John Tia Akologu, Minister of Information said: "Government's attention has been drawn to accommodation concerns raised by the Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings."

It said government had been in constant touch with members of the Ex President's team who had indicated a preference for reconstruction of the burnt Ridge premises.

"Government has taken the necessary steps to ensure that this is done and is awaiting certain information from the Ex President's team to be able to conclude arrangements to ensure that reconstruction commences," the statement said.

It said the team indicated the ex-President's preference for a rented facility for the period of reconstruction of the Ridge premises.

The statement said this was after certain options offered by government were rejected by the former first family.

"The rent for the said premises would be borne by government," it added.

The statement said the Former First Lady was aware of all the efforts government is making towards resettlement.

"Government wishes to state categorically that it remains committed to its responsibilities towards ex-Presidents of our dear country, "the statement said.
