Census implementation committee to provide laptops to districts

Koforidua, May 24, GNA - The 2010 census implementation committee wo uld provide laptops to districts that have no internet to facilitate the onli ne registration of field officers and supervisors for the exercise. The Deputy Eastern Regional Statistician, Mr Abaka Ansah, who disclo sed this at the inauguration of the New Juaben Municipal census committee, sa id qualified personnel would be registered online. He said to ensure fairness to all qualified persons, the census implementation committee would make the laptops hooked to the internet available at all districts throughout the country where there are no services. According to Mr Ansah, armed with lessons from the 2000 census, abou t 80 percent teachers and 20 percent of others with a minimum of HND would be contracted as enumerators or supervisors during the exercise. Mr Ansah said the implementation committee was putting in measures t o ensure that only qualified and committed persons were selected for the exercise, and appealed to the committee members not to compromise on any situation for the success of the census.

He said in New Juaben it was estimated that about 400 persons would be contracted as enumerators and supervisors during the census, and appealed to the committee members to collaborate with the media for public education. Mr Rexford Awotwi, Regional Statistician, said the implementation committee was considering all national programmes and other conditions to

ensure that the period of the exercise did not coincide with any programm e that could affects its credibility. Mr Alex Asamoah, New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who inaugurated the 10-member team, urged them to bring experiences from thei r various fields to bear on the implementation of the census in the municipality. He stressed the need for intensive public education even before the exercise, for the public to understand the essence and the modus of the exercise for cordiality between the field officers and people. Mr Samuel Bawa, Regional Coordinating Director and Regional Chairman of the Census Implementation Committee, expressed the hope that with the calibre of persons on the committee, the exercise would be successful and

acceptable to the public. The 10-member committee included the municipal directors of educatio n, Electoral Commission, National Commission on Civic education (NCCE), Information Service, Social Welfare, the Coordinating Director and offici als of the Statistical Service. 24 May 10
