Fierce Gun Battle Rages in Bawku

After long hours of meeting behind closed doors over the instability of the Bawku Municipality, the Upper East Regional Security Council and that of the Bawku Municipality have recommended the beefing up of military personnel from the present number of 150 to 300 to ensure effective patrol.

The arrival of the Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo and his entourage in Bawku was greeted with gunshots.

The Minister and his team were in the conflict area due to the recent killing of innocent citizens by combatants from both the Kusasi and Mamprusi sides.

A Mamprusi man was on Tuesday butchered and the body set on fire, raising tension in the area to an unprecedented level.

A Kusasi woman had earlier been killed and the body dumped in a well during the Easter festivities.

According to reports, some unidentified assailants yesterday broke through the security cordon put in place and shot at any living thing, with the security agencies returning fire. The minister and his security team had to run for cover.

The gunshots also sent market women and residents scampering yesterday- a market day in Bawku.
