Avenor squatters ejected

The Operations Commander for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Sylvester Boyuo Bawisa Thursday led a team of security personnel to decongest an illegal settlement at Avenor.

Superintendent Boyuo Bawisa told Asempa News the demolition exercise is the execution of a court order obtained by the Word Miracle Church International, rightful owners of the land. Notices of the exercise had been served the occupants last week.

However, upon the arrival of the decongestion team, a young man, Hafiz Ahmed who claims to be a caretaker of the land resisted action and engaged the police from carrying out the demolition exercise, saying that the land belongs to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission.

Other occupants of the structures set fire into the wooding structures after packing their belongings out of them.

The over 300 occupants of the structures denied being served any notice. Some alleged their caretaker, Hafiz Ahmed collected an amount of GH¢5 each from them with the intention of bribing the police to prevent them from carrying out the operation

Hafiz Ahmed however denied the allegation.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested four men including Hafiz Ahmed for alleged arson and also to assist in investigations into other allegations leveled against him by the occupants.
