UEW to mount special programmes for teachers

Winneba(C/R), Nov. 2, GNA - The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) would soon mount postgraduate programmes in English, Mathematics and Science through the distance learning mode.

The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw said this at the 14th Congregation at Winneba on Saturday. Five thousand, four hundred and thirty-nine graduands from the Winneba Campus were awarded with certificates, Diploma and degrees. He said the University has been addressing the shortage of teachers through a well-structured and supervised internship programme, where final-year students undergo a field experience or internship in schools and colleges in all the ten regions across the country.

The VC said the internship programme is sustaining teaching and learning in some schools in the countryside, adding that, the one year programme offers the opportunity for the student teachers to develop practical understanding and appreciation of their roles as teachers. Professor Asabere-Ameyaw said a large number of classrooms in rural basic schools are without qualified teachers, so the University needs to train and or retrain teachers, increase access and at the same time improve quality in teacher education to meet the demands. "The quality of our human resource depends on the quality of our education, and the quality of our education also depends on the quality of our teachers.

"As a nation therefore, we need to place teacher education at the centre of our educational agenda to turn out quality teachers who would provide quality education," the VC said. Nov. 2 09
