Flood victims appeal for support to salvage their suffering

Nawuni (N/R), Oct. 26, GNA - Flood victims in the Northern Region have appealed to the government and the donor community to assist them with relief items.

They said this year's floods had been the same as that of 2007 but victims had not received much attention in the media to ensure that displaced persons received aid from NADMO and the donor community. Mr. Ibrahim Azindoo, chairman of Golezole community, one of the flood affected communities in the Tolon/Kumbungu District, made the call on behalf of the affected communities on Monday at Nawuni when he received some relief items from Northern Ghana Aid (NOGAID) for re-distribution. Northern Ghana Aid (NOGAID) is a leading development organization championing development aspiration of the northern regions of Ghana. The relief items to the affected communities was based on an assessment tour that NOGAID conducted in eight badly affected communities in the 'overseas' areas of the Tolon-Kumbungu District but due to logistical constraint the NGO had managed to assist only three communities. The communities are Golezole, Afayilli and Buglon communities where community members received maize and treated water.

Mr. Azindoo said because of the floods children from the affected communities were no longer attending school and appealed to the government to consider building primary schools closer to them so that children did not have to cross rivers before attending school. He said all the people in the affected communities were farmers but no tractor service or subsidy in fertilizer had ever been offered them. He said one major health problem affecting them was the constant snake bite and scorpion sting.

Mr. Azindoo appealed for cement, roofing sheets and other building materials so that they would move up stream to construct new homes to prevent the perennial flooding.

Mr. Mustapha Sana, Executive Director of NOGAID, said NOGAID would always collaborate with its development partners especially Doctors Worldwide (DWW) who made it possible for the presentation to help the vulnerable in society.

He said NOGAID and DWW were working to reduce poverty in the north.
