Scores feared drowned in the Volta Lake

Hohoe, Oct 21, GNA-Scores of people including members of one family returning from a funeral at Wusuta-Kpebe in the Kpando district to a village near the Afram Plains were feared to have drowned at dawn in the Volta Lake. A total of 18 people among travellers on board the engine fitted boat tied to a canoe, which capsized after encountering a storm on the vast lake, have not surfaced. Seventeen survivors were receiving medical attention at the Wusuta Community clinic and Anfoega Catholic hospital respectively. Mr. Francis Ganyaglo, Kpando District Chief Executive, who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency said the family members were returning to their base at Afraim Plains when the craft on which they were sailing met a storm and capsized.
He said the boat which brought them to Wusuta failed to honour the agreement of returning to pick them up to the Afram Plains, hence the improvised measure to tie an engine boat to another canoe to ferry the family members.
He expressed his condolences to the family and passengers and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
