Armed robbers kill policeman at Filling Station

Tema, Oct. 13, GNA - A 28-year-old policeman of the Tema Buffalo Unit, was shot dead at about 1130 hours on Monday, by five armed robbers at the Excel Filling Station at Klagon near Lashibi.

A Home Finance Company bullion van had gone to the filling station to collect money when the robbers in an attempt to rob the station, shot and killed the police constable, and seized his AK 47 rifle.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Augustine Gyening, Tema Regional Police Commander, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in Tema, said the robbers shot Miss Patricia Mensah, a cashier in the leg. ACP Gyening said when another policeman at the scene started exchanging fire with the robbers; they abandoned their operation vehicle, and took to their heels with an amount of 2,859 Ghana Cedis.

He said in their desperation to flee, the robbers jumped from one tro-tro vehicle into another, and unfortunately for them, a police patrol team which got wind of the robbery, chased them and exchanged fire with them on the Spintex Road.

The Tema Regional Police Commander said the robbers managed to escape, but the police were able to retrieve the AK 47, and also seized a pump action gun.

ACP Gyening said the body of the deceased, had been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary in Accra, while the cashier was currently responding to treatment at the Emergency Ward of the Tema General Hospital.
