Drug peddler jailed 10 years

Kumasi, Oct 9, GNA - A circuit court in Kumasi, on Wednesday sentenced Baba Kanjarga, 43, to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for peddling drugs.

He pleaded not guilty to possessing a quantity of Indian hemp. The court, presided over by Mr Justice Amo-Yartey, directed that the sentence should take retrospective effect from April 10, the day of his arrest.

Police Inspector Philip Bebli told the court that Kanjarga was a resident of Moshie Zongo, a suburb of Kumasi.

Prosecution said on April 10, following a tip-off that Kanjarga was peddling narcotic drugs, the Police search his room and found a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Insp. Bebli said an examination carried out at the Police Forensic Laboratory in Accra indicated that the dried leaves were Indian hemp. He said Kanjarga in his caution statement mentioned Issah as the supplier of the drugs but he could not assist the Police to arrest him (supplier). 08 Oct. 09
