Naval rating drowns while saving holiday maker

Accra, Sept. 23, GNA - A Naval Rating drowned at the Osu beach on Monday in a bid to save the life of a holiday maker, the Ghana Armed Forces announced on Wednesday.

It said in a statement signed by Lieutenant Commander M.A. Larbi, that Leading Seaman Paul Dongyiri, who was at the beach at about 1030 hours heard shouts for help by the holiday maker. He took off his clothing and dived into the sea with only his "boxer shorts" but has since not surfaced.

The Ghana Armed Forces Public Relations Directorate said the incident had been reported to the Osu Police Station while navy personnel were also patrolling the beach in search of the body.

It asked members of the public who happen to see a body that fitted the description of the Naval rating along the beach to report to the nearest police station or military unit or call (021) 777991/761094.
