Veep: Public support vital for Nkrumah centenary celebration

Accra, Sept. 8, GNA - Vice President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday asked for more public support to facilitate the Kwame Nkrumah centenary festivity, slated for September 21.

He expressed confidence that the committee organising the celebration, under the chairmanship of Professor Akilakpa Sawyerr would live up to its promise of accounting for every pesewa collected and spent.

Mr Mahama made the request when he received a cheque of GH¢5000 from the Cocoa, Coffee and Sheanut Association at the Osu Castle towards the celebration.

Mr Joseph Claud Kalfa, Managing Director of Sonitra also presented a cheque of GHc5, 000 at the function.

Mr Mahama said with the experience of Ghana@50 a thing of the past, transparency and accountability would be the hallmark of the celebration and asked contributors to the event not to entertain any fears that their money would go down the drain.

He said the committee had started on a good organisational spree and that the occasion would be a memorable event that would find its rightful place in history.

Mr Kalfa said he was associated with the defunct Ghana National Construction Corporation, which was later renamed State Construction Corporation during Nkrumah's era.

Alhaji Alhassan Bukari, Acting National Chairman of the Cocoa, Coffee and Sheanut Association said Kwame Nkrumah gave the association recognition and a voice.

Prof Akilakpa Sawyerr said the committee would work with transparency and report promptly to Ghanaians whatever money they might have contributed to the celebration. 08 Sept 09
