150 Police Officers To Undergo Training In Britain

One hundred and fifty officers of the Ghana Police Service are to undergo a two-week course in Britain to update their skills. The course, which starts in August, forms part of a four-year programme drawn up by a local Non-Governmental Orgainsation (NGO), Fraternal Order of the Police (FOP) to enhance the image of the police.

The Chairman of the FOP, Mr. Tony Prempeh said the objectives of the organisation is to mobilise funds from local and foreign organizations to give the police modern training, adequate logistics and restore public confidence in them. He disclosed this in an interview with the “Daily Graphic” after the launching of the FOP by the Deputy Minister for Interior, Mr. Yaw Barimah.

Mr. Barimah said to stem the tide of sophisticated crime and sustain the peace, stability and the current democratic dispensation in the country, police officers need to be adequately resourced. As part of measures to address their manpower and logistics problems, the government is sourcing funds to procure vehicles and communication gadgets for the service. Spare parts woud also be made available to repair the 305 broken down Land Rovers of the Service.

Mr. Barimah blamed the poor performance of the Police Service on 20 years of neglect by the former regime and urged NGO’s, individuals and institutions to support government’s efforts to carve a new image for the police.
