Library project for Swedru is in limbo

Agona Swedru, Aug 17, GNA - The Swedruman Council of Chiefs has expressed dismay about the delay to construct a library that Mr Samuel Kweku Obodai, the Member of Parliament for Agona West, had promised Agona Swedru.

Nana Ogyabea Badu Ehuren, Sanaahene of Swedruman Council of Chiefs, who spoke to newsmen at Agona Swedru to round off the Akwambo festival, said during last year's Akwambo, Mr Obodai said GETFund had given 25, 000 Ghana cedis for the construction of the library. He said the project was overdue and the chiefs were not happy about the delay tactics adopted by the MP, adding that children of Swedru and environs needed to sharpen their reading skills to enhance their education.

When Mr Obodai was contacted, he confirmed that 25,000 Ghana cedis had been given to him and but the project had delayed because the chiefs had failed to provide land. He said the education was one of his top priorities and he would never do anything to thwart the construction of the library. "If the land is ready the project will commence today," he said. Nana Ogyabea Badu Ehuren said the council would soon petition the Speaker of Parliament to intervene and cross check from the MP whether the money had been misapplied or still there for the execution of the project.

He said the chiefs at Swedru would not sit down unconcerned for the MP to toy with the education of the children in the area because without education there would be no progress. Nana Ehuren appealed to the government to build a bridge over River Akora to link Otabilkrom and Gomoa Aboso to ease traffic congestion that had hit the town, especially on market days.

He said the chiefs had released land for the construction of a community center to be used as a durbar ground at Swedru and appealed to the Agona West Municipal Assembly to assist. 17 Aug 09
